Matthew Stilwell

Matthew Stilwell is the Director of the European Office for IGSD focusing on research, policy development, and implementation, regarding climate, waste/Basel, and trade issues. He is Managing Director of the Program on Governance for Sustainable Development at the Bren School. He previously served as Legal Counsel to the UN Environment Programme, Senior Economic Law Advisor to the Basel Convention Secretariat, Special Fellow at UN Institute for Training and Research, Managing Attorney at the Center for International Environmental Law, Co-Director of the Duke-HEI Program on Global Policy & Governance, Fleishman Fellow at Duke University’s Terry Sanford Institute for Public Policy, and a commercial lawyer with the Australian law firm Freehills. Mr. Stilwell has counseled developing countries in World Trade Organization negotiations, convened and supported working groups on international environmental policy for UNEP, advised the World Bank team elaborating World Development Report 2003: Sustainable Development in a Dynamic World, and consulted to a range of governments, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations. He received a Masters Degree in Law from Columbia University and he received a Bachelor of Laws (with Honors) and Economics from the University of Tasmania.
