Matthew Stilwell

Matthew Stilwell is a Senior Attorney at IGSD with experience counseling governments, international and non-governmental organizations in multilateral negotiations on trade, climate, energy, and sustainable development.

He previously served as an advisor to African, least developed and small island states at the UN climate negotiations, Managing Director of the Program on Governance for Sustainable Development at the Bren School, Legal Counsel to the UN Environment Programme, Senior Economic Law Advisor to the Basel Convention Secretariat, Special Fellow at UN Institute for Training and Research, Managing Attorney at the Center for International Environmental Law, Co-Director of the Duke-HEI Program on Global Policy & Governance, Fleishman Fellow at Duke University’s Terry Sanford Institute for Public Policy, and a commercial lawyer with the Australian law firm Freehills. 

He holds a Masters Degree in Law from Columbia University and received a Bachelor of Laws (with Honors) and Economics from the University of Tasmania.
