Hiring: International Environmental Law Fellow
The Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (IGSD) is offering a one-year paid fellowship, with the opportunity to extend to a second year, to support its effort to combat climate change by advancing fast-mitigation strategies that reduce near-term risks to communities and ecosystems. These strategies include cutting climate “super pollutants,” such as methane and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and protecting and enhancing carbon sinks. Fast mitigation strategies are essential to limiting warming and must complement long-term decarbonization and carbon-removal efforts. The IGSD team is active throughout the world advancing and implementing laws, policies, and related actions that will keep the world from crashing through the 1.5ºC guardrail for a safe planet.
IGSD is offering an international environmental law fellowship for one early career lawyer to participate in critical climate policymaking and litigation. Bar membership preferred.
Working with IGSD team members, the Law Fellow will play a key role in implementing this fast-mitigation agenda through a variety of projects. Typical assignments include:
Working with partners to improve climate governance and policies related to fast mitigation. For over a decade, IGSD has been spearheading national, regional, and international strategies to reduce SLCPs (black carbon, tropospheric ozone, methane, and f-gases such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)).
Conducting research on novel legal theories and strategies, and helping manage our international climate litigation portfolio. IGSD brings the fast mitigation focus to climate litigation efforts and supports litigants around the world who are bringing cases to compel fast and more aggressive action on climate change.
Assisting with preparation for and at international treaty meetings, including the Montreal Protocol and the UNFCCC. Phasing down HFCs under the Montreal Protocol, and parallel efforts to increase energy efficiency in cooling that can double the climate impact of an HFC phasedown, are central to IGSD’s fast-action climate mitigation campaign. IGSD also participates in the UNFCCC and its COPs where other progress is possible.
Advancing legal and scientific thinking on key climate proposals. IGSD actively publishes law reviews, scientific articles, primers, and other background notes. See recent publications by IGSD.
