K. Madhava Sarma & K. Ramalakshmi Montreal Protocol Science Champion Award
The K. Madhava Sarma and K. Ramalakshmi Montreal Protocol Science Champion Award is designed to promote science-based investigations to strengthen the Montreal Protocol. The award is sponsored by the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (IGSD), a non-governmental organization based in Washington, D.C., and Paris that works to promote just and sustainable societies and to protect the environment by advancing the understanding, development, and implementation of effective and accountable systems of governance for sustainable development.
The Award includes a US$5,000 research stipend plus sponsorship of economy air travel and expenses to attend one of the week-long meetings of the Montreal Protocol where the findings of the sponsored work will be presented in a side event. These meetings include the Open Ended Working Group (OEWG), which is typically mid-year; the Meeting of the Parties (MOP) which is typically end-of-year; and the Ozone Research Managers Meeting (ORM), which is typically mid-year. Nomination Deadline: 15 January 2021, with decision by 31 January 2021.
Qualifications
- Eligible candidates must have a master’s degree or higher and must be a member or sponsored by one or more current or past members of a Montreal Protocol Assessment Panel.
Judging Criteria
- Results that will help strengthen the Montreal Protocol with policy-relevant science by one or more of the following:
- Undertaking or integrating science for a new understanding of problems and/or solutions;
- Finding synergies among international environmental agreements;
- Correcting misunderstandings and inaccurate information;
- Entrepreneuring solutions to previously intractable problem;
- Results should be targeted for consideration in the 2022 Montreal Protocol Quadrennial Assessment.
