OEWG38 Side Event: New technology to reduce the cost of phasing down HFC-134a from motor vehicle air conditioning

TATA Motors Limited (headquarters India), Mahle (headquarters Germany) and the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development demonstrated the Secondary-Loop Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (SL-MAC) systems that can reduce the use and emission of any refrigerant by at least 50% and increase the fuel efficiency as a climate co-benefit. The system with both HFO-1234yf (GWP<1), which is protected by application patents and HFC-152a (GWP=138), which if free from intellectual property constraints.  The presentation included preliminary estimates of the cost savings possible with the SL-MAC system.
